The Making of Hand Jam

Katy's Hand Jam is a soothing, multi-purpose hand salve originally made for rock climbers but used by everyone. All our ingredients are organic and/or wild-crafted. The herbs are native to the Pacific Northwest and have been specifically chosen for their known therapeutic properties to help heal dry and chapped skin, blisters, cuts, bruises, scrapes, sunburns as well as eczema, psoriasis and muscle and tissue damage. Our beeswax is made by a farmer in Washington state who is committed to creating pure and natural products.

In order to make Katy's Hand Jam, our proprietary blend of herbs are placed in a glass container with high quality olive oil where they sit for at least a month. This allows the medicinal properties of the herbs to be infused into the oil. At the end of this process, the herbs are strained out leaving a nourishing liquid blend. This is heated and mixed with all natural, pure beeswax, poured into tins, and allowed to cool.

Our History

In 2001, Katy began making her herbal hand salve. Her inspiration came from working with native plants while teaching outdoor education and restoration in Seattle. She taught native plant identification and then taught herself the medicinal properties of these plants. With this knowledge she made a hand salve that was focused on skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis, and gave it away as Christmas presents.

Her friends were so excited about the salve that they decided to start a business focusing on the needs of climbers and their hands and skin. The first batch was made and distributed in Seattle, WA. After a year of marketing the product locally, Katy's Hand Jam began distributing in British Columbia, Canada and throughout the US. With the support of many friends and her family, Katy's Hand Jam is a successful business which is dedicated to the sustainable practice of harvesting native plants and herbs.
